How is Himalayan Pink Salt the healthiest and purest?

November 5, 2013 by Jodi MacKinnon 2 Comments

What is Himalayan Pink Salt?

Himalayan Pink Salt traces its origins back roughly 250 million years. When the Himalayan Mountains were first formed, the ancients seas evaporated leaving mineral-rich salt deposits buried deep beneath the surface. While the salt is mined from under land-locked mountains, Himalayan Pink Salt is very much a salt born of the sea and has roughly the same composition as other gourmet sea salts – with a few important differences.

How is Himalayan Pink Salt Different?

Himalayan Pink Salt contains 84 minerals found in the ancient salt deposits that have been protected under the Himalayan Mountains long before industrialised contamination appeared. For that reason, many consider Himalayan Pink Salt to be among the purest salts found on earth.

When it comes to mineral content, Himalayan Pink Salt weighs heavy on the scoreboard. Compared with everyday table salt, Himalayan Pink Salt wins 84-2.

Due to the ancient sea origins, Himalayan Pink Salt is also richer in mineral content than many current-day sea salts that are harvested from the world’s oceans.

Regular table salt is mass-produced refined salt. The refining process strips away any and all minerals from the original salt deposits, leaving nothing but sodium chloride. An anti-caking agent is typically added to table salt, as well as iodine to help prevent goiter due to iodine deficiency.

In addition to sodium chloride, Himalayan Pink Salt contains essential minerals that include:

  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Zinc
  • Magnesium
  • Iodine

The natural and appealing pink hue of the salt comes from the presence of iron.
In addition to being more visually striking than ordinary table salt and winning the mineral content battle decisively, Himalayan Pink Salt wins on the texture front as well. Use it as a finishing salt to experience a salty crunch that dissolves quickly to produce a truly unique culinary experience.

Himalayan Pink Salt Health Benefits

With 84 trace minerals not found in everyday table salt, the health benefits of Himalayan Pink Salt are touted as many. Health proponents and nutritionists carry the pink salt flag proudly with claims of healing properties and positive impacts. Others say that health benefits are inconclusive.

The combination of minerals and elements is said to help the body more easily absorb the nutrients in food, balance electrolytes and help with overall circulation.

While concrete health benefits of Himalayan Pink Salt may be hard to find, there is a prevailing rationale behind its healthy superiority to everyday table salt.

Himalayan Pink Salt is a pure and natural salt that has been protected from any contamination for roughly 250 million years. Table salt is chemically treated, bleached and heated to remove any impurities.

Himalayan Pink Salt health benefit proponents cite the common sense approach that all-natural products are decisively better than processed. It’s hard to argue with that logic.

There is no controversy in the kitchen, though. Extra health benefits or not, Himalayan Pink Salt is prized by chefs and home cooks simply because it provides a superior taste and better enhances the flavours of their dishes.

How to Use Himalayan Pink Salt

You can use Himalayan Pink Salt in any kitchen application where salt is called for.

Use Himalayan Pink Salt as a finishing salt to provide texture and flavour. Try a few sprinkles on top of chocolate for a striking visual appeal as well as to enhance sweetness. It also excels on salads, fish, raw and steamed vegetables, watermelon, and sweets such as ice cream and caramel.

Using Himalayan Pink Salt blocks for serving shrimp, fish, vegetables and grilled meats is another way to infuse its distinct salt flavour to a variety of dishes.

The bottom line is that Himalayan Pink Salt is just as versatile as processed table salt, but provides more visual appeal, better flavour and is packed with essential minerals.  And you can use it for just about anything you make in the kitchen.

    hi

I am in a confusion at the moment whether using pink or other salt.

I was using pink salt for 2 years and just stop using it a month ago due to my blood test result on my tyroid proving disfunctioning (hypothyrodism).
I was quite shock to know that pink salt does not have iodine at all. and table salt has iodine inside though table salt is a type of full processed salt.

I also received another information about pink salt that the colour of pink has heavy metal component and the Na Cl should be white, not pink.

I would appreciate if you could help me to clarify this matter.

    Thank you.
    Regards
    Yuni

      Hello Yuni:

      Thank you for contacting us.

Yes, table salt contains minute amounts of iodine to prevent iodine deficiency worldwide.

Pink Himalayan salt gets its colour from trace amounts of iron oxide.

Salt comes in a variety of colours, depending on how and where it is produced. Himalayan salt comes in white, pink and black.
